Raveendran - The Composer Legend

.

As a follower of malayalam/tamil film music, its shame on me to tell that I didnt know about Raveendran till late 90s!!! (though i had heard many of his songs). But thats a strange fact! Then, When did i start noticing him?
'Ayal kathayezhuthukayanu' was my first encounter with Raveendran Master's music. The musical depth of the song 'Etho Nidra than' touched me very much. From there i started noticing the name 'Raveendran' and to my delight, many of the songs of te 80s, which had a strong impact one me, to quote a few - Thenum vayambum, Ithirippoove Chuvanna Poove, Sukhamo Devi, His Highness Abdulla, turned out to be Raveendran's.
To be fair, Raveendran master is much more than what we, average listeners including myself, think of. 'Pramadavanam' and 'Harimuraleeravam' are only just two instances of that creativity. If we sail back to the 80s, you may dig out many gems of this very much underrated composer. There was definitly a freshness in 'Thenum Vayambum'. But the depth of Cranatic Music as well as malayalam folk music in many of his songs such as 'Pon Pularoli Poo Vithariya', 'Raavil raaganilavil', 'Chiriyil Njan Kettu', Ezhu Swarangalum' etc etc will make you wonder about his exemplorary control over the two music forms.
Its not a mere classical stuff that Raveendran threw out - you will never feel the over-dosage of ragams in his songs. But if you can blend a ragam like 'Hamsadhwani' in 3 different ways (Manathaaril ennum, Raavil Raganilaavil, Ragangale Mohangale), along with providing all the beauty, dercorations of a film song, that means he is simply great!!!
Though he was focused on maintaining the purity of carntaic music in his songs, he gave out some trendy songs as well, still holding his stampage over them. 'Rajeevam Vidarum nin mizhikal', 'Ithiri nanam' were songs that i fell in love with, without knowing that it was Raveendran. His 'Aye Auto' was a sensation of the time.
In a career spanning nearly 25 years, Raveendran was one of the very few MDs, who showed little creative wear out. His recent releases like Nandanam, Mizhi Randilum, Ammkkilikkoodu were simply the best songs that we came to hear during the past couple of years.
Some of his songs can be considered as benchmarks for certain carnatic ragams. The highly unnoticed, unrecognized, but yet of high class, 'Parayoo Njan engane parayendoo' (movie:Chaithanyam) will introduce all the hidden beauties of the ragam 'Saramathi'. Similarly 'Pon Pularoli', 'Gopangane Athmavile' (Natta), 'Idayaraga', 'Aathmavin Pusthakathaalil' (Darbari Kanada), 'Leelathilakam Charthi', 'Gopikavasantham' (Shanmukhapriya), 'Kudajadriyil', 'Sreelathikakal' (Revathi), 'Aalilamanjalil' (abhogi).. The list is endless..
Its to be remembered that Raveendran songs were one main factor behind the commercial success of Malayalam Cassette Market. It all started with 'His Highness Abdulla'. 'Pramadavanam' was a great hit, and 'Bharatham' and 'Kamaladalam' followed. Evan 'Nandanam' was a hot seller.
There are a lot of movies, which has not seen the theaters, or became a commercial disaster, which are rememberd today for Raveendran's songs. eg: Mahassar ('Etho Kilinaadamen Karalil'), Neelakkadambu ('Kudajaadriyil), Telephonil Thodaruthu etc etc..
There released an album 'Vasanthageethangal' by Tharangini, in the first half of 80s, and it was a trend setter. The album was packed with high quality, folk-oriented as well as classical based songs. Yesudas sung all the songs in this album, tuned by Raveendran. Among them 'Maamankam Palakuri Kondaadi' became a smash hit. The orchestration, lyrics and tunes reflected sheer Kerala nativity. A lot of albums followed, and Raveendran himself came out with many 'Onam' songs very frequently. 'Arayanname Aaromale' (Vasanthageethangal), 'Paathiramayakkathil' (Ponnona Tharangini) were glimpses of high-class creativity. You hear 'Paathiramayakkathil' and will instantly catch hold of 'Saaramathi' (again!!). Hear this song in the night, in light moon-lit to get the feel of it..(Remember 'Puzhayorazhakulla Pennu').
I was a bit too late when i came to know the long forgotten songs of Raveendran Master, and my respect for him grew to a level of worship. Luckily, i got an oppurtunity to meet him just 2 weeks before his untimely death, at Kochi. Was that i was too afraid, or Raveendarn master looked too tired (reason why, we came to know when he died), i couldnt speak anything on my obsessions towards his songs. I could hardly introduce myself.
It was a real shock after two weeks, when i came to know that he has left this world.. What, and from whom, are we to expect now?

Nikhil,
Nicely written.. we have similar tastes :)
Raveendran's music has helped me survive lots of difficult moments; I could just get lost in them during moments of adversity. No other musician brings out that indescribable pleasure, pain, pathos, bliss from music.. His songs have given more to me than Beethovan, Bach or Ilayaraaja. I wouldn't have appreciated the depth of calibre and versatility of Yesudas or Chitra, had it been not for him. He had this amazing gift of not just coming with apt tune for a song in tune with its mood, but also orchestrate amazing background scores with beautiful use of percussions, base guitar, flute, violin and what not.
I think he did not get the credit or appreciation he deserved. Of course his songs place him in the altar of music in the heart's of people like you and me.
His death was the first time when I felt real sadness at the passing away of a public figure. I often dream of him, and we have interesting discussions about his songs :) I badly wanted to meet him to request him to create a series of lectures on classical carnatic music to introduce the beautiful ragas and their different forms..

anyways,
adios.

Hi Nikhil,

It was great pleasure to read your writings on this topic. Those who love malayalam film music, for sure, love Ravindran master but majority have not much depth information about masters works. Your creation give that detail information. Understand that you have spend hrs in the research of this topic. Though your profession is IT, your commitment towards the topic is appreciable.

Hi Nikhil..
Very well written. His demise was a shock and malayalam music has began to see his void. His blend of melodies, rendering styles are second to none. It was during late 1990's that I really began to notice the name Raveendran behind my favorite songs (Varmukile, Azhake Nin Mizhineer, Aalilmanjalil, Aadhya vasanthamey, Sukhamo Devi, Innumente Kannuneeril, Enthinu veroru sooryodayam, Nandanam songs, list goes on) and from then on I admired his musical talents. I have felt him using veena, violin, flute and tabla more in his songs. I like other contemporary MD's like Ilayaraaja, Vidyasagar, Ouseppachan, Johnson.. but I have felt a special unexplainable attachment to Ravvendran mash's songs. His songs create that perfect mood, brings songs to life, unleashing the power of its lyrics - like the songs of Baburaj mash, Devarajan mash and MBS.. His absence is really a loss to all keralites.
Can you please send me these songs to arunz87@gmail.com as I don't have them:
Raavil raanilavil, Chiriyil njan kettu, Raajevam vidarum, Parayoo njan engane parayendoo..

Thanks Nikhil!!

Dear friends,

Undoubtedly Ravindran mash was the best music director of all times. Talking about some of his songs, do you know that 'valampiri sankhil' won the best singer award for G Venugopal more than once in the youth festivals. Dont forget about 'payippattattil vallom kali' which is an evergreen hit. There is a melodious song in Aayirappara, a duet by Yesudas and Arundhathi ''Yaathrayayi.....'' which is a soul stirring one.
Pallavur Devanarayanan is remembered only for its songs.

Ravi mash has a great role in the success of Lal as he has composed 25 or 26 of Lal's films and all those films were noted for their music

There are films like Mazha which are full of fantastic compositions. 'Vaarmukile...' is one of its kind. 'Himasaila....' from Mazha even though is not in the film exposes the tremendous talent of Chitra. Same is the case with 'Santhatham....' sung by Dasettan which is not in the film.

There can not be anyone like Raveendran .

Hi,

I just stumbled upon this page when I was looking for the lyrics of "Puzhayorazhakulla Pennu"

We all know Raveendran sir was the master composer of our times and he has created a void. We have talented composers like M Jauachandran. His songs also have the classical and folk base. but, does not have the charm of Raveendran sir's stamp. The characteristic use of violins, Mridangam etc were his stamps.

Some of his songs create a peaceful feeling to the listner.

Some of the songs that I like most:

- Ottakambi nadam
- Manasorukovil (especially the violin essays in the background)

- Poovinullil pooviriyum
- 7 swarangalum

and then almost everyone of them starting from the last 80s till his last film.

- Suryagayatri (Abhogi)
- HH Abdullah Jog & Shanmkhapriya
- Nandanam Mohanam

And many more...

The greatest composer in Malayalam as RD Burman in Hindi...

Hi Nidhin,

Very useful article about Raveendran Mash. There is no doubt about the songs composed by him will be remembering in the human's mind. He had composed a number of semi-classical songs those were beautifully sung by Dasettan (from the song Ezhu swarangalum ..... his last song Gange.. in that range). Melodies like vikara nauka, etho nidrathan, Manassin manichimi.... He also composed a lot of Festival songs also.. All 10 great songs in Vasanthageethangal (which has the record collection in 1985), Ponnonatharangini...
I like one his light music "Chillitta vathilil vannu nilkkamo melle thurannu tharaamo..." has a romantic touch.
Whenever I hear the song 'Tharake mizhiyithalil kanneerumayi.. aare thirayuvathare nee...' in the film Choola, I think one of the twinkling stars in the sky may be the music legend Raveendran Mash.

Perhaps Raveendran Mash is the best among any other composers in India, and the one who really exploited the capacity of Dasettan to the maximum. I don't think we can expect any creation like `pramadavanam' or `harimuraleeravam' ever in future. Also, who can forget the beauty of `ennum chirikkuna suryante'(festival songs) - Dear Nikhil thanks for your lovely article; KAMARUDIN
